Wesley Church was the first church in our conference to be an official sponsor of Katherine Parker by pledging $2500 to support her agricultural ministry in Nepal. She will keep us informed of what she is doing with the people of her part of Nepal. Katherine's is working with the United Mission to Nepal, an ecumenical ministry that has a vision of a "fullness of life for all in a transformed Nepali society." Katherine has a place on the web that she also uses to share her experiences with the rest of us on her blog at http://bokashi.blogspot.com. More frequent updates are posted on her Facebook page at facebook.com/bokashi |
The members of the United Methodist Church pay for all of the administrative overhead costs on one Sunday called "The Great Hour of Sharing" so ALL of your donation goes to the project you specify. UMCOR has an "A" (top, excellent) rating from the American Institute of Philanthropy. To find out more about UMCOR, see their "About Us" page and here's a direct link to their "Financials" page and FAQ page. UMCOR is among the first organizations into a disaster area and among the last to leave after several years of work—we're in it for the long haul, long after the situation leaves the media spotlight. See also Charity Navigator's evaluation of UMCOR.
Our church's United Methodist Committee On Relief (UMCOR) and United Methodist Volunteers In Mission (UMVIM) are the two best avenues for us to help those affected by the several recent natural disasters.

Jerry Ludeke is one of our long-time members, active in all areas of the church, along with many community groups and retired faculty from Bakersfield College (in the Academic Development department). She took a trip to China to teach English in early 2002. She sent us reports of her adventures periodically and they are posted below.
